Our crisis communication system built for OTP by 2011 always included an element that summarized the most important information concisely. Initially, this was a two-page A4 extract of the large 80-page crisis communication handbook, which could be folded to business card size. However, the increasingly digital everyday life demanded a new solution: we had to respond to this by reimagining the previously paper-based crisis communication guide in a new format.
We created a smartphone application, which we named CrisisComPass. This self-developed web-based mobile application contains the most crucial elements of crisis management: contact information for crisis management team members, a list of fundamental questions, and media handling rules. Additionally, it includes a push-notification section where we can instantly forward messages related to the current crisis to the phones of crisis managers and executives. The application also features a News section that continuously collects articles and case studies about current crisis communication situations worldwide. An advantage of the app is that most of its functions work offline.
CrisisComPass, as a new type of crisis communication solution, doesn't stockpile pre-made scenario solutions. It provides tools and practical knowledge to determine whether any situation is a crisis; to connect the affected parties as soon as possible in such cases; to begin situation assessment and crisis management by asking the right questions. Our solution was recognized with a Gold Creative Prism Award in 2016.
